Beyond Knob-and-Tube: Other Outdated Wiring Richmond Homes May Be Hiding

Knob-and-tube gets most of the attention, but it's far from the only legacy wiring we find in Richmond-area homes. Depending on when your house was built — or last rewired — you may have aluminum branch wiring, old armored "BX" cable, cloth-wrapped conductors, or ungrounded two-prong circuits behind your walls. Some of these are bigger deals than others, and insurance companies don't treat them equally either.

As with knob-and-tube, our advice is the same: none of these is a reason to panic, all of them are a reason to get an assessment, and the right answer depends on condition — not just vintage. Here's the field guide.

Aluminum branch wiring (roughly 1965–1973)

When copper prices spiked in the mid-1960s, builders wired hundreds of thousands of homes with solid aluminum wire for ordinary branch circuits — lights and outlets. If your home was built or added onto between about 1965 and 1973, it's worth checking.

The problem: Aluminum expands, contracts, and oxidizes differently than copper. At connection points — outlets, switches, splices — those properties cause connections to loosen and overheat over time. This isn't theoretical: the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) found that homes wired with pre-1972 aluminum wire are roughly 55 times more likely to have connections reach fire-hazard conditions than comparable copper-wired homes. The failures happen at the connections, not in the middle of the wire.

What can be done short of rewiring: The CPSC recognizes a permanent repair called COPALUM — a specialized crimp that pigtails a short copper wire onto each aluminum conductor, done with a certified tool. AlumiConn setscrew connectors are a widely used alternative. Simply installing "CO/ALR"-rated outlets and switches helps at those devices but doesn't address fixtures and appliance connections, so the CPSC doesn't consider it a complete repair. A whole-home rewire is the most thorough fix, and often what insurers ultimately want.

Insurance reality: Aluminum branch wiring is one of the most commonly flagged items in underwriting. Many carriers require a documented COPALUM/AlumiConn remediation or full replacement as a condition of coverage.

One important distinction: stranded aluminum feeder cable — the heavy wire serving your panel, range, or AC condenser — is still installed today and is generally fine when properly terminated. The concern is the small solid aluminum wire on 15- and 20-amp circuits.

Old armored cable — "BX" (common through the 1940s–50s)

Armored cable — flexible spiral metal jacket around cloth-insulated conductors, universally called BX — was the step between knob-and-tube and modern wiring in many Richmond homes.

The problem: Modern armored cable (Type AC) has a thin bonding strip inside the armor that makes the jacket a reliable path for fault current. That strip wasn't required until around 1959. On older BX, the spiral armor alone can be a high-resistance ground path — during a fault, it may not carry enough current to trip the breaker, and the armor itself can heat up instead. That's why older BX armor isn't recognized as an equipment grounding conductor under today's NEC (Section 250.118), and why we treat pre-1959 BX circuits as effectively ungrounded. The cloth-and-rubber insulation inside also shares knob-and-tube's aging problem: it gets brittle, especially in ceiling boxes where fixture heat has baked it for decades.

The good news: BX in good condition, properly supported and terminated, has a solid service record — the metal jacket even provides physical protection modern plastic cable doesn't. Intact old BX can often remain in service, with GFCI protection added on its ungrounded circuits. Replacement is warranted where insulation is crumbling, armor is rusted or damaged, or circuits are being extended.

Cloth-wrapped and early nonmetallic cable (1930s–1960s)

Early "Romex"-style cable used rubber-insulated conductors wrapped in cloth, usually with no ground wire. It shares one main failure mode: the insulation dries out and becomes brittle, particularly at connection points and anywhere it runs warm. Sound cloth-wrapped cable can stay in service; crumbling insulation at every box you open is a rewiring conversation. Insurers vary widely on this one — some don't ask, others treat any pre-1960s wiring as a rating issue.

Ungrounded two-prong circuits (pre-1962-ish)

Even homes with otherwise decent mid-century wiring often have no ground wire — grounding-type receptacles weren't broadly required until the early 1960s. Two-prong outlets aren't a defect; they're honest. What we flag is three-prong outlets on ungrounded circuits, which advertise protection that isn't there. The NEC (406.4(D)(2)) permits a practical fix: replace ungrounded receptacles with GFCI-protected ones labeled "GFCI Protected / No Equipment Ground." That meaningfully reduces shock risk without a rewire, though sensitive electronics and surge protectors still want a true ground.

How insurance companies see all this

Underwriters generally rank these roughly as follows: knob-and-tube and solid aluminum branch wiring draw the hardest lines (frequently requiring remediation or replacement for coverage), followed by cloth-insulated and pre-1959 BX wiring. Requirements vary a lot by carrier, and they've been tightening. If you're buying an older home or shopping policies, a written electrical assessment often makes the difference between a declined application and a workable path.

The bottom line

Old wiring isn't a verdict — it's a starting point for an inspection. The age of a system tells us where to look; its condition tells us what to do. Plenty of 70-year-old BX is quietly doing its job, and plenty of 1970s aluminum needs attention this year. Beware of blanket answers in either direction from anyone who hasn't opened your panel.
